Overview

Westleigh is a large area of public open space in Sydney’s northern suburbs, in Hornsby Shire. The site covers about 36 hectares and combines a broad cleared central area with extensive surrounding bushland, giving it a very different feel from a typical suburban park. It sits beside Berowra Valley National Park and links into adjoining creekline bushland, so even though it is close to residential neighbourhoods, the landscape quickly shifts into a more natural setting.

What shapes the place most is that contrast between open ground and remnant vegetation. Around the edges, the bushland is the stronger presence, with regenerating slopes and creek corridors helping connect Westleigh to a much larger network of habitat across the district.

Highlights

The main appeal of Westleigh is its bushland setting on the edge of a much bigger green corridor. The western side meets Berowra Valley National Park, while Dog Pound Creek bushland lies to the north and Waitara Creek bushland to the east. That gives the area a sense of depth and continuity that is unusual in suburban Sydney.

Scenically, it is the mix of open ridgeline space and enclosing bush that stands out. The cleared centre creates a feeling of room, while the surrounding vegetation softens the edges and draws the eye out toward the valleys and reserve country beyond.

Best Time to Visit

Westleigh is worth seeing year-round, but the cooler months from autumn to spring are generally the most comfortable for walking in this part of Sydney. After decent rain, the surrounding bushland tends to feel greener and the creekside vegetation is at its freshest, while spring is often the best season to notice flowering native plants.

Plants and Animals

The bushland at Westleigh includes remnant and regenerating vegetation, with five vegetation communities recorded across the site. Among them is Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest, a critically endangered ecological community, along with other areas of high conservation value around the bushland margins.

The site is also known to support several threatened species. That ecological value is a big part of what makes Westleigh more than just open space, particularly where the bushland connects into the larger habitat of Berowra Valley and the neighbouring creek corridors.
