Among the Last Giants of the Big Scrub

Overview

Victoria Park Nature Reserve protects a small but important remnant of the Big Scrub, the vast subtropical rainforest that once covered much of the Northern Rivers. The reserve sits near Meerschaum Vale, about 16km south-east of Lismore, and combines older rainforest with areas that have been steadily restored since the late 1970s.

Although it covers only 17.5 hectares, this patch carries real weight in the story of the region. Around 9 hectares hold original Big Scrub rainforest, while former paddocks around it have been replanted to help rebuild some of the forest structure that was lost after clearing.

Highlights

The character of Victoria Park is all about dense subtropical rainforest on the rich basalt soils of the Big Scrub country. The forest has a layered, three-storey structure, with tall strangler figs rising above a mix of white booyong and other broad-leaved rainforest trees, giving the reserve a cool, enclosed feel that is quite distinct from the surrounding farmland.

What stands out most is the sense of contrast. Outside the reserve the landscape is open and agricultural, but inside it quickly shifts to deep shade, large trunks, palms and ferns. It is also one of just six reserves protecting surviving remnants of the original Big Scrub, which helps give the place a significance beyond its size.

Best Time to Visit

Victoria Park can be rewarding at any time of year, but the cooler months usually make the rainforest more comfortable for a longer wander and quieter pause among the trees. After rain, the forest tends to feel especially lush, with the dense canopy, palm growth and layered understorey looking at their richest.

Because this is a subtropical rainforest remnant, seasonal change is more subtle than in drier bushland. The appeal is less about a single standout season and more about the steady atmosphere of shade, moisture and greenery.

Plants and Animals

This reserve is known for its tree diversity, with more than 150 species recorded. Among them are white booyong, red bean and Moreton Bay fig, along with the very rare jointed baloghia. The rainforest community here is described as a white booyong sub-alliance, with a classic three-level structure that supports both canopy giants and a dense lower layer of palms and smaller plants.

Wildlife typical of the subtropical rainforest still persists here, including red-legged pademelons, bandicoots, green catbirds, crested hawks and eastern yellow robins. Birdlife is a strong part of the reserve’s appeal, and the sheltered forest also supports species that are easily missed unless you slow down and listen.

Culture and Heritage

Victoria Park has a direct cultural connection to the Widjabul people of the Bundjalung Nation. The rainforest plants of the Big Scrub were used for food and medicine, and the reserve includes interpretation that explains some of these long-standing relationships with the forest.
