Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for walking, with mild temperatures and good clarity through the forest. Summer is still popular, though the reserve is really more about shade, rivers and tall forest than bright open-country scenery.

The vegetation here reflects Tahune’s damp southern setting. Tall forest is a constant presence, and along the rivers there are pockets of rainforest, including Huon pine in suitable wet alluvial areas. In Tasmania these riverine rainforest communities are typically associated with species such as myrtle beech, leatherwood, sassafras, celery-top pine and blackwood.
