City and estuary views from Rosny Hill

Overview

Rosny Hill Nature Recreation Area is a small but distinctive bush reserve on Hobart’s eastern shore, within the suburb of Rosny. It covers 21.4 hectares on a prominent hill south of the Tasman Bridge, with remnant native vegetation surrounded by established residential areas. Despite its urban setting, it still feels like a patch of original country held above the river and suburbs.

The hill is best known for its lookout, but the reserve matters for more than the view. It combines scenic, recreational and ecological value in one compact area, with native plant communities and habitat that have persisted in an otherwise developed part of the city.

Highlights

The defining feature here is elevation. From the lookout, the outlook stretches north and south along the Derwent River and estuary, across to Hobart’s city centre, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Government House, the Tasman Bridge and kunanyi / Mount Wellington with its foothills. You can also look east to the Meehan Range and south-east towards the South Arm Peninsula coastline.

Rosny Hill also stands out in the wider landscape. It is a prominent wooded rise on the eastern shore, and part of its character comes from that contrast between bush-covered slopes and the surrounding suburbs.

Best Time to Visit

This is a place that changes with the light more than the season. Clear days bring the broadest river and city views, while early morning and late afternoon tend to give the hill its strongest sense of height and openness. In spring, the reserve is especially interesting for its native grassland and flowering plants, which are a big part of what makes the site ecologically important.

Plants and Animals

Rosny Hill protects several remnant native vegetation communities, including inland Acacia verticillata low forest, lowland Themeda grassland, lowland grassland complex, and patches of Bursaria-acacia woodland and scrub with grassy Eucalyptus viminalis woodland. In a reserve this size, that mix gives the hill a surprisingly varied bush character.

The area is also important for threatened flora. Recorded species include leafy sun orchid, grassland flax lily, spear grass, tall wallaby grass, shade peppercress and narrow leaf New Holland daisy. These remnants sit inside a heavily urban setting, so their value comes not just from what survives here, but from how uncommon that kind of vegetation has become around it.
