Overview

Powelltown sits in the forested Upper Yarra district, east of Melbourne and close to the Little Yarra River. Winter and early spring tend to suit anyone who enjoys the damp, fern-filled side of the Central Highlands, while the warmer months bring longer daylight and clearer conditions through the taller forest.

Because the appeal here is tied so closely to tall wet forest and creek country, recent rain often makes the landscape feel especially vivid, with the green understorey and river flats looking at their best.

Plants and Animals

The vegetation around Powelltown is closely associated with Central Highlands Mountain Ash forest. These tall open forests typically include Mountain Ash as the upper canopy, with Messmate, Mountain Grey Gum and Manna Gum also present in places, especially near watercourses. Beneath them, the understorey is usually made up of shrubs, wattles and tree ferns, with a moist ground layer of ferns, sedges and herbs.

Alongside these broad forest patterns, the area also supports locally significant plant life. Powelltown is closely associated with the named Powelltown Correa, and official reserve data for Powelltown Bushland Reserve shows a substantial native flora list. In the wider forests and reserves of the district, introduced animals and weeds remain an ongoing management issue, and deer are established in the broader landscape.
