Discover Patriarchs Conservation Area, Flinders Island
The Patriarchs Conservation Area, located in Lackrana on the east coast of Flinders Island, offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and observe a variety of wildlife in their natural habitat. Situated between Middle and South Patriarch, this area is accessible via Lees Road, though it requires 4WD access. Managed by a dedicated trust and maintained by volunteers, it invites visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of Flinders Island’s environment.
The conservation area is home to an A-frame building, which provides basic yet comfortable accommodation with bunk beds. There’s also a shaded gas barbecue area, making it a great spot for a picnic or an overnight camping trip. However, be sure to bring your own drinking water and firewood. The sanctuary is a thriving habitat for native wildlife, including wombats, wallabies, and the iconic Cape Barren Geese. Visitors are encouraged to contribute to the upkeep of the sanctuary with donations.
Patriarch Sanctuary offers an exceptional chance to see and photograph native animals during the day. Wallabies, often seen in large groups, freely roam the area and are so accustomed to humans that they’ll even eat out of your hand. It’s an unforgettable experience to witness these animals in such close proximity.
The Patriarchs themselves are three impressive granite peaks that rise above the surrounding plains on the mid-east coast of the island. Their towering presence was noted by explorer Matthew Flinders, who, upon first sight, named them the Three Patriarchs—a fitting tribute to their grandeur.
