Molonglo Gorge Nature Reserve: A Natural Escape near Canberra
Molonglo Gorge Nature Reserve is a hidden gem, offering a scenic escape for visitors to Canberra, located just 16 kilometres from the nation’s capital. Covering over 500 hectares along a 16-kilometre stretch of the Molonglo River, the reserve boasts a diverse landscape perfect for walks, bushwalks, and hikes.
The reserve is renowned for Molonglo Gorge, a dramatic feature with towering cliffs reaching 60 metres and sheltering a series of cascading waterfalls and deep pools within the gorge. This significant area serves as a vital wildlife corridor, connecting woodlands and open forests for various species.
Adventurers can explore the gorge along a designated walking track that winds its way for 3 kilometres alongside the river, culminating at the Blue Tiles picnic area. For a leisurely outing, the Molonglo Gorge Recreation Area at the western end of the gorge provides picnic tables, barbecues, and toilets, making it a perfect spot for families.
Keep in mind that cycling is only permitted on designated roads and trails, and dogs must be kept on leash while on designated tracks.
