Walks and Hikes in the Great Western Tiers
The Meander Conservation Area, located within Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed wilderness, offers an extraordinary landscape for nature enthusiasts and hiking adventurers alike. Spanning approximately 1,700 hectares, it sits just 24 kilometres south of Deloraine in the breathtaking Great Western Tiers Mountain Range, about 230 kilometres from Hobart, the state’s capital city. This stunning region is renowned for its varied bushwalks, cascading waterfalls, and serene natural beauty.
For those seeking a challenge, the hike to Meander Falls is the most popular trail in the area. This moderately strenuous track takes you through dense forests, rocky terrain, and along rushing streams, rewarding walkers with spectacular views of the falls. If you’re keen to explore further, there are plenty of other trails to discover. Tracks to Bastion Cascades, Split Rock Falls, Shower Cave Falls, and Chasm Falls each offer unique perspectives on the area’s rich diversity of landscapes and flora. These hikes range from short strolls to more demanding routes, making them suitable for both casual walkers and experienced hikers.
Getting to the Meander Conservation Area is relatively straightforward. Starting from Launceston, follow the Bass Highway southwest to Deloraine, a charming town often regarded as a gateway to the region. From Deloraine, head up Highland Lakes Road for 10 kilometres until you reach the small township of Meander. From here, take Huntsmans Road for 7 kilometres before turning onto Meander Falls Road. The final stretch leading to the Meander Forest Reserve parking area and the start of the trails is unsealed but manageable for most 2WD vehicles.
The Meander Conservation Area offers something for everyone, from casual family walks to more rigorous hikes for seasoned bushwalkers. Its accessible trails and stunning scenery make it a must-visit for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in Tasmania’s natural beauty.
