On the edge of the Mersey’s upper country
Overview
Lorinna is a small, remote settlement in Tasmania’s north-west, in Kentish municipality west of Lake Cethana and the Mersey River system. It sits in steep, folded country where farmland, wet forest and protected private reserves meet, giving the area a quiet, back-country character rather than the feel of a formal national park.
What stands out most here is the sense of transition in the landscape. Lorinna lies between the more settled agricultural country around Sheffield and the rougher uplands leading toward the Great Western Tiers and the larger protected areas beyond. That gives the district a mix of river valleys, forested slopes and enclosed rural clearings that feels distinctively inland and mountainous.
Highlights
The appeal of Lorinna is in its landscape setting rather than one single landmark. The country around the locality is cut by the upper Mersey catchment and framed by steep hillsides, with changing views across forest, pasture and water. In clear weather, the relief of the land is what stays with you most: long ridgelines, deep folds and a strong sense of being in Tasmania’s wetter, hill country interior.
Because this is a settled locality rather than a single compact reserve, the scenery also shifts quickly from one patch to the next. One moment it is open grazing land, the next it is dense native bush, creek lines and sheltering forest. That variety gives Lorinna a more layered look than many places that are defined by just one landform.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring through autumn is usually the easiest time to appreciate Lorinna’s landscape, when days are longer and the district’s river valleys, forests and surrounding high country are at their most accessible and green. Spring brings fresh growth and flowing creeks, while autumn often has the clearest light for looking across the folded terrain.
Winter has its own appeal if you like quiet country and moody weather, but this is a cool inland part of Tasmania and conditions can feel much sharper here than on the coast. The setting is best enjoyed when you have time to notice the shifts between mist, forest and open country rather than rushing through.
Plants and Animals
Lorinna sits in a part of Tasmania where native vegetation remains an important part of the landscape, both in formal reserves and on protected private land. Across the district, that means a mix of eucalypt forest, wetter gullies and riparian vegetation shaped by the upper Mersey catchment.
The area is also known for significant conservation values on private land. Recorded natural values at Lorinna include the rare Forth River peppermint, which points to the botanical interest of this inland north-west district and the role private reserves play in protecting habitat alongside the broader reserve network.
