Lake Mountain Alpine Resort Walks and Hikes Near Melbourne

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is one of Victoria’s officially designated alpine resorts and is operated by Alpine Resorts Victoria. Located near the township of Marysville in Victoria, it sits around 120 kilometres north east of Melbourne, making it one of the most accessible alpine destinations for day trips and short stays from the state capital.

Best known for its snow season, Lake Mountain is very much a year round destination with experiences that suit families, outdoor lovers, and anyone keen to spend time in the mountains. It is the closest alpine snow resort to Melbourne, roughly a two hour drive from the CBD, and offers more than 35 kilometres of cross country skiing trails alongside a wide range of seasonal activities. One of the great strengths of Lake Mountain is how easy it is to visit. You can drive up, park close by, and step straight into the outdoors without needing advanced skills or specialist planning.

In winter, the mountain comes alive with snow based fun for all ages. Designated snow play areas make it easy for first time visitors to enjoy the conditions, while three toboggan runs offer simple, energetic fun. For those looking for a slower pace, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are popular options, with lessons available through the Snowsports Department. Snow gear and equipment hire is also available on site, making it easy to try something new without needing to own specialised gear.

As the snow clears, the landscape changes character and becomes a colourful backdrop for warm weather walks and bushwalks. From November through to January, guided wildflower walks are offered, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the alpine environment while enjoying gentle hikes across the plateau. These months are particularly rewarding for anyone interested in seasonal changes and quiet time outdoors.

Getting to Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is straightforward. From Melbourne, travel through the eastern suburbs and into the Yarra Valley, then follow the Maroondah Highway across the Black Spur to Narbethong before turning off towards Marysville. From Marysville, the road climbs steadily to the resort, offering a scenic approach that feels far removed from the city despite the short distance.

Lake Mountain also offers some of the best hikes and bushwalks near Melbourne, with a network of well marked and well maintained trails suitable for a wide range of abilities. These walks include options for short, relaxed strolls as well as longer hikes that explore the alpine landscape. Picnic areas and open viewpoints along the way make it easy to slow down and enjoy the surroundings, and the variety of routes means there are all trails to suit different interests and fitness levels.
