Overview

Kowen Forest is a large plantation landscape on the north-eastern side of Canberra, covering 4,670 hectares. First planted in 1926, it is now a mixed recreation and forestry area where stands of pine sit alongside pockets of native bush and river country. Its position near Queanbeyan and on the ACT’s eastern edge gives it a noticeably different feel from the city’s suburban reserves, with a broader, more open sense of space.

What makes Kowen distinctive is that it is not just a patch of plantation. The area also includes places such as the Molonglo River corridor, Old Kowen Homestead and the old village site, so the landscape shifts between managed forest, recreation country and older rural ground.

Highlights

The most striking part of Kowen Forest is the contrast between long rows of pine and the rougher country around the Molonglo River and nearby Molonglo Gorge. That mix gives the area a varied visual character, from enclosed forest sections to more open views where the land falls away toward the river.

Sparrow Hill, close by on the eastern side of the forest, adds to that sense of elevation and changing terrain. Even without focusing on any one route, Kowen stands out for its big-sky plantation scenery, undulating ground and the way native bushland threads through the commercial forest.

Best Time to Visit

Cooler months are usually the most pleasant time to spend time in Kowen Forest, when the plantation roads and surrounding bush feel crisper and more comfortable for longer walks. Autumn and spring also suit the area well, especially when the contrast between dark pines, open clearings and greener native vegetation is at its clearest.

Because the place is used both for recreation and active forestry, the character of different parts of the forest can change through the year as harvesting and regrowth cycles move across the landscape.

Kowen Forest combines commercial pine plantation with native forest and other remnant vegetation, so it supports more than a single forest type. That mix is part of what gives the area its character, with planted sections broken up by native bush and riverine country.
