Rare Black Gum Forest in West Moonah

Overview

Jim Bacon Memorial Reserve is a patch of bushland and open parkland in West Moonah, within Glenorchy’s network of natural areas on Hobart’s northern side. What makes it stand out is not its size, but the fact that it protects a 2 hectare remnant of rare black gum forest in a suburban setting. That gives the reserve a very different feel from a standard neighbourhood park, with native vegetation and conservation values sitting close to surrounding homes.

The reserve also supports grassy woodland habitat with a concentration of uncommon native plants. It is one of those places where the natural character matters as much as the open space itself, and that balance shapes the experience of being there.
