Winter has its own appeal, especially when snow settles on the higher peaks, but the contrast between town and uplands becomes much sharper at that time of year.

The natural surroundings around Huonville range from estuarine habitat to forested hills and, not far away, alpine and subalpine plant communities. In the Huon Estuary, protected habitat supports species such as the vulnerable Australian grayling, along with whitebait and nursery areas used by sharks.

Further inland, the nearby Hartz Mountains are known for a mix of rainforest, wet eucalypt forest, subalpine woodland and alpine communities. In spring, waratah is a striking feature in the higher country, and the park supports a large share of Tasmania’s native land animals as well as more than forty bird species.
