Hogarth Falls sits in Peoples Park at Strahan on Tasmania’s west coast, a little over 300 kilometres from Hobart. Although the falls are close to town, the setting feels distinctly local to the wet west coast, with tall forest giving way to cool-temperate rainforest around the creek line.

The place is best known for the contrast between its soft, green forest surrounds and the rock face at the falls themselves. Water drops over beds of rock that were once horizontal and have since been tilted close to vertical, which gives the falls a slightly unusual shape and a more rugged look than the gentle approach through the trees suggests.

Hogarth Falls can be rewarding at any time of year, but it tends to feel at its best when the west coast is doing what it does naturally, with cool air, damp forest and good flow in the creek. Autumn, winter and spring usually suit the character of the place particularly well, when the rainforest looks fresh and the falls often have more presence.

Summer can still be a pleasant time to visit, especially if you are already staying in Strahan, but this is less a place for big seasonal colour than for the steady, green atmosphere created by moisture, shade and forest cover.

Plants and Animals

The forest around Hogarth Falls mixes towering eucalypts with classic west coast rainforest species including leatherwood, sassafras and myrtle. That blend gives the park a layered look, with taller canopy trees above and denser, darker growth nearer the watercourse.

Wildlife can be easy to miss in such thick vegetation, but platypus are occasionally seen in the creek below the falls. Even when animal sightings are quiet, the vegetation is a big part of the experience here, especially where the wetter gullies support the richest rainforest growth.

Peoples Park Botanical Reserve, including Hogarth Falls, is recognised for its local historic heritage as a public open space that shows an early appreciation of the natural landscape.
