Overview

Gooseberry Hill National Park is a small national park on the western edge of the Darling Scarp, in Perth’s eastern hills near Kalamunda. Despite its modest size, it has a strong sense of elevation and outlook, with steep slopes dropping away toward the Swan Coastal Plain and a landscape shaped by the scarp itself.

The park is closely associated with the Zig Zag, a former railway route that now traces its way down the hillside. That history still gives the place much of its character, combining open views with pockets of bush and the feeling of being right on the break between the hills and the plain.

Highlights

The big draw here is the position on the escarpment. From the upper slopes, the land falls away sharply and opens out to long views across the Swan Coastal Plain, with Perth, the airport and the low-lying plain spread out below. In clear light, the contrast between the wooded hills and the flatter country to the west is what makes the place memorable.

The park’s steep terrain also gives it a more enclosed side, with bush birds, vegetation and rocky hillside country softening the exposed lookouts. That mix of broad outlooks and close hillside detail is what gives Gooseberry Hill its appeal.

Best Time to Visit

Cooler months are usually the most comfortable time to spend longer in the park, particularly from autumn through spring when the hills are greener and the air is often clearer for wider views. Spring also tends to be the liveliest season for flowering plants and bird activity through the scarp bushland.

Late afternoon can be especially rewarding for the changing light over the plain, while winter and early spring often bring the freshest-looking conditions on the slopes.

Plants and Animals

Even within a compact area, the park supports dense hills vegetation and plenty of birdlife. The steep bushy slopes create cover for smaller birds, and the mix of escarpment vegetation and open viewing points means wildlife is often heard before it is seen.

Kangaroos are also known from the area, especially in quieter periods of the day. Overall, the park is less about a single standout species than the character of a small but lively patch of Perth Hills bushland perched above the plain.

Culture and Heritage

Gooseberry Hill National Park is recognised as Whadjuk Country. Alongside that continuing Traditional Owner connection, the park also carries visible reminders of more recent history through the Zig Zag route, which began as a railway line climbing the hill and still shapes how people experience the escarpment today.
