Overview
Gibraltar Range National Park sits on the Gibraltar Range between Glen Innes and Grafton, where the tablelands begin to break toward the coast. It is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, a sign of how important these ancient rainforest remnants are in the wider landscape. The park is known for the way granite country, cool forests, creeks and escarpment scenery all meet in one stretch of northern New South Wales.
This is a place of strong contrasts. One moment you are in open forest among granite outcrops, and the next you are in damp, shaded rainforest with ferns, moss and running water close by. That mix gives the park its character and makes it feel quite different from many other inland parks in NSW.

The big natural drawcard here is the meeting of granite landforms and old rainforest. Huge boulders and rocky crags rise above forested slopes, while clear creeks and cascades cut through the range. In scenic terms, Gibraltar Range is all about elevation, rock, water and the sudden shift from tableland forest to lush gullies.
The park also stands out for its World Heritage rainforest setting. Across the range, the scenery changes from exposed granite formations to dense green pockets of ancient forest, with waterfalls and creek lines adding another layer to the landscape. It is a park with a strong sense of depth and texture rather than one single feature.
Best Time to Visit
Spring is one of the loveliest times to be here, especially when wildflowers such as waratahs and Christmas bells are out. The cooler months also suit the park well, with crisp air on the range and good conditions for taking in the lookouts, forest scenery and creeks without the summer heat.
After rain, the waterfalls, cascades and rainforest sections tend to feel at their richest, while warmer months bring active frog and bird life. Conditions can vary quite a bit across the range because of the elevation, so the park can feel cooler and wetter than lower country nearby.
Plants and Animals
Gibraltar Range National Park protects plant communities and wildlife with very old roots, including rainforest species linked to the ancient Gondwanan flora of eastern Australia. The variety of habitats across granite ridges, wet forests, creeks and sheltered gullies supports a rich mix of life.
Wildflowers are a notable part of the park’s seasonal character, with waratahs and Christmas bells among the best-known displays. Animal life includes species such as yellow-bellied gliders and giant barred frogs, and the park also supports threatened plants, including the endangered soft grevillea.
