East Gippsland’s pocket of cool-temperate rainforest

Overview

Fairy Dell Flora Reserve is a small protected patch of warm temperate rainforest near Bruthen in East Gippsland, around 300 kilometres east of Melbourne. It stands out in a landscape better known for drier forest, with a sheltered, moist gully environment that supports plant communities not often seen in this part of Gippsland.

The reserve was badly affected by the 2019–20 Black Summer fires, but the rainforest has been regenerating strongly. Even after fire, the place keeps its distinct character as a damp, enclosed forest with fern-filled understorey and a noticeably cooler feel than the country around it.

Highlights

The main appeal of Fairy Dell is its change in atmosphere. As you move into the gully, the forest closes in, the light softens and the vegetation shifts to mossy trunks, tree ferns and broad-leaved rainforest plants. That contrast is what makes the reserve memorable.

Scenically, it is the sheltered creek-line setting that defines the place rather than big views or dramatic high country landforms. The reserve is best appreciated for its intimate forest character, with dense greenery, damp microclimate and the sense of stepping into an unexpectedly lush pocket of East Gippsland bush.

Best Time to Visit

Fairy Dell is at its best when the gully is holding moisture and the foliage looks fresh, which is often from autumn through spring. After rain, the ferns, mosses and shaded understorey show the reserve at its most distinctive.

Summer can still be rewarding for the contrast between the cool gully and the surrounding forest, but the reserve’s character is generally strongest in the cooler months when the rainforest vegetation looks fullest and the sheltered setting feels most pronounced.

Plants and Animals

This reserve protects a rare local fragment of warm temperate rainforest. Tree ferns and lilly pilly are among the plants that give it a more northerly rainforest feel, while moss-covered rocks and trunks reflect the persistently damp conditions in the gully.

Native birds recorded here include Lewin’s honeyeater, crescent honeyeater and gang-gang cockatoo. The reserve has also been noted for the tiny spider ant, and its return after the fires has been a useful sign that the bush is recovering.
