Ridgetop Bushland on Sydney’s Northern Fringe

Overview

Duffys Forest sits on Sydney’s far northern edge, where ridgetops, plateaus and upper slopes still carry remnants of a rare bushland community that now survives in scattered patches. Around 30 kilometres north of the city centre, the area feels strikingly open and bushy for somewhere so close to suburbia, with native vegetation linking into larger reserves and national park country nearby.

What gives the place its identity is the Duffys Forest ecological community itself, an open forest and woodland associated with shale lenses and lateritic soils. Much of it has been cleared or broken up over time, so the remaining bushland is important not just for scenery, but as part of a much larger patchwork of habitat across the Northern Beaches.

Highlights

The character of Duffys Forest comes from its elevated sandstone country, with bushland spread across ridges and exposed slopes. In places the land drops away toward the escarpment above Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Cowan Creek, giving the area a strong sense of height and space rather than dense enclosed forest.

Another standout is the mix of vegetation across a relatively small area. Open woodland, dry sclerophyll bush and heath all contribute to a landscape that feels varied and distinctly Sydney, with rough-barked eucalypts, bloodwoods and scrubby understorey shaping the look of the country.

Best Time to Visit

Duffys Forest is at its best in the cooler months from autumn to spring, when temperatures are milder and the exposed ridge country is more comfortable for walking. Spring is especially rewarding for wildflower season, when heath and shrub layers are more noticeable and many of the area’s distinctive plants are easier to appreciate.

Plants and Animals

This is an important area for native flora, including red bloodwood, black ash, Sydney red gum and brown stringybark in the canopy, with shrubs and smaller plants such as Caley’s grevillea, woody pear, Christmas bush, hairy geebung, glandular pink-bell, curved rice flower and Port Jackson heath. Some local reserves also support threatened plants including Eucalyptus camfieldii, Tetratheca glandulosa and heart-leaved stringybark.

The bushland also forms part of a significant wildlife corridor linking larger protected areas with the Narrabeen Lagoon catchment. Recorded fauna in and around Duffys Forest include Southern Brown Bandicoot, New Holland Mouse, Sugar Glider, Long-nosed Bandicoot, Swamp Wallaby, Bush Rat and Lace Monitor, along with other threatened species known from local reserves.
