Coastal Walks of the Cronulla Peninsula and Esplanade

The Cronulla Peninsula and Esplanade form one of Sydney’s most accessible and varied coastal walking areas, combining beaches, headlands, parks, and open water views along the edge of Port Hacking. Located in Cronulla, New South Wales, about 26 kilometres south of Sydney’s CBD, this peninsula offers a mix of short walks, relaxed bushwalks, and longer hikes that suit everything from a quick local stroll to a full day exploring the coastline.

The peninsula is home to a series of well known regional parks that are linked by the Esplanade and surrounding paths. These include Don Lucas Reserve, Dunningham Park, Cronulla Park, Shelly Park, Oak Park, Hungry Point Reserve, Darook Park, and Salmon Haul Reserve. Together, they create a connected network of coastal spaces where sandy beaches give way to rock platforms, grassy parklands, and clifftop lookouts, all within easy reach of shops, cafes, and public transport.

Walking along the Esplanade provides a natural spine through the area, making it easy to link multiple parks into a single outing or to focus on one section at a time. The paths are generally well maintained and clearly defined, making them suitable for casual walks as well as longer hikes that explore all trails running along the peninsula. The variety of environments keeps each section feeling different, from sheltered bays to open coastal edges overlooking the ocean.

The Cronulla Peninsula is especially well suited to flexible outings. You can enjoy a short coastal walk, extend it into a longer bushwalk through adjoining reserves, or plan a relaxed loop that finishes near cafes and amenities. Its proximity to the city and strong public transport connections make it an appealing option for both planned trips and spontaneous visits.
