Canton Beach sits on the western side of Toukley on the edge of Tuggerah Lake, around 100 kilometres north of Sydney. This is a lakeside foreshore rather than an ocean beach, with shallow water and a low, open shoreline that gives the place a quieter, more sheltered character than the surf beaches further south.

Canton Beach suits clear, dry-weather days when the lake is at its calmest and the broad water views are at their best. Warmer months tend to bring the liveliest atmosphere along the foreshore, while cooler months can be especially pleasant for a quieter visit and softer light across the lake.

After rain, the character of the lake can change noticeably because this part of Tuggerah Lake has limited flushing and is affected by stormwater flowing into the system. In settled weather, the foreshore is easier to appreciate for its open outlook and calmer waters.
