Discover Wright Forest: A Tranquil Bushland Escape
Wright Forest Bushland Reserve, located approximately 45 kilometres east of Melbourne, offers a serene escape into nature. Situated above the Wattle Creek Valley between Avonsleigh and Cockatoo, this 161-hectare reserve is a haven for walkers, nature enthusiasts, and birdwatchers.
Explore the reserve’s diverse walking tracks, ranging from short nature walks to more challenging hikes. The 20-kilometre trail from Cockatoo to Gembrook is suitable for moderately fit walkers and offers opportunities to experience the undulating terrain and tranquil surroundings.
Wright Forest is home to a variety of native wildlife, including a diverse range of bird species. Keep an eye out for parrots, rosellas, kookaburras, and less common species such as Gang Gang Cockatoos and Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos. It is important to remember that introduced animals such as foxes, dogs, and cats pose a threat to native wildlife. Visitors are encouraged to keep pets restrained and to protect the delicate ecosystem.
The reserve’s flora is equally impressive, with over 75 species of native plants thriving within its boundaries. The cool, moist conditions in the creek gullies support a diverse range of ferns, while the upper slopes are dominated by Mountain Grey Gums and wattles.
Wright Forest also offers a secluded picnic area on Bailey Road, providing a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch. Please note that portable barbecues are not permitted due to the lack of running water.
For a unique experience, combine your visit to Wright Forest with a journey on the Puffing Billy Railway, which passes through the area.
