Where Ocean Beaches and Broadwater Shores Meet
Overview
The Spit is the long sandy peninsula at the northern end of the Gold Coast, bordered by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Broadwater on the other. It sits just north of Main Beach, roughly 80 km south of Brisbane, and combines open shoreline, dunes, coastal vegetation and broad stretches of public open space in a part of the city that still feels distinctly shaped by sea and sand.
Across its 201 hectares, almost 140 hectares are set aside for park activities, with large areas of foreshore and green space retained as part of the peninsula’s character. The natural core of The Spit is closely tied to Federation Walk Coastal Reserve, which runs through one of the few remaining established dune systems on the Gold Coast.
Highlights
The striking thing about The Spit is its narrow shape and the contrast between its two edges. On the ocean side, the landscape is defined by surf beach, wind-shaped dunes and a long run of shoreline. On the Broadwater side, the scenery softens into calmer water, open parkland and views across to South Stradbroke Island and the Seaway.
Federation Walk Coastal Reserve gives this area much of its scenic identity. It contains about 60 hectares of vegetation and nearly three kilometres of shoreline, preserving a substantial section of coastal bushland within a heavily developed part of the Gold Coast. That mix of beach, dunes, scrub and waterfront is what makes The Spit feel different from the suburbs around it.
Best Time to Visit
The Spit is enjoyable year-round, but the cooler months from autumn to spring are usually the most comfortable for longer walks around the headland and foreshore. Clear winter and early spring days tend to bring the crispest light and the best balance between sunshine and milder temperatures.
Summer has the brightest beach atmosphere, though it is also the hottest and most humid time of year. If you are mainly there for the setting rather than a swim, mornings outside the peak summer heat generally show the place at its best.
Plants and Animals
This is one of the more important remaining pockets of coastal habitat on the Gold Coast. Federation Walk Coastal Reserve protects dune and shoreline ecosystems that support biodiversity and help hold the peninsula together as a functioning coastal landscape. Current restoration work focuses on native planting, weed control and strengthening ecological resilience across the reserve.
The vegetation is typical of exposed coastal country, with dune plants and coastal scrub adapted to salt, wind and shifting sand. Birdlife is a regular part of the scene, especially along the beach and water’s edge, where seabirds and shorebirds are commonly seen moving between the ocean, the Broadwater and the Seaway.
