Overview

Reedy Creek Reserve sits near Agnes Water on the central Queensland coast, protecting a sizeable patch of coastal and riparian bushland that has largely disappeared from many developed parts of the region. The reserve covers 543 hectares and includes creeklines, paperbark country, woodland and vine-forest areas, giving it a surprisingly varied feel for a relatively compact coastal landscape.

The creek itself is a big part of what makes the place distinctive. It runs through low-lying wetland country and supports interconnected freshwater habitats, while the reserve as a whole also helps protect the adjoining foreshore environment.

Highlights

The standout character here is the meeting of wet coastal lowlands and forest. Reedy Creek winds through melaleuca country and tannin-stained wetlands, with corymbia woodland and pockets of vine forest adding contrast across the reserve. That mix creates a landscape that feels softer and more enclosed than many drier Queensland bush reserves.

Another defining feature is the way the reserve links inland habitats to the coast. It buffers the nearby foreshore and sits beside important turtle-nesting beaches, so the scenery shifts from paperbark flats and creekside vegetation to coastal sand country over a relatively short distance.

Best Time to Visit

The more comfortable months are usually the cooler part of the year, when walking weather is milder and humidity is lower. In a place shaped by wetlands and coastal lowlands, seasonal conditions make a real difference to how the landscape feels, with the warmer, wetter months tending to bring heavier moisture and denser growth.

Plants and Animals

Reedy Creek Reserve protects rare vine-forest communities, riparian melaleuca forest and corymbia woodland, along with substantial wetland habitat. Around 164 hectares of the reserve is mapped as wetland, which gives a good sense of how important water is to the ecology here.

The creek supports birds, freshwater fish and amphibians, and species recorded here include the Grey Goshawk. The reserve also forms part of a broader coastal habitat used by marine turtles for nesting on the adjacent foreshore. Freshwater surveys have also identified a previously unrecorded crayfish in the Tenuibranchiurus genus, alongside a rich mix of native fish in the creek system.

Culture and Heritage

Reedy Creek Reserve is on the Country of the Bailai, Gooreng Gooreng, Gurang and Taribelang Bunda peoples. The reserve contains cultural heritage materials of interest to Aboriginal people, and an additional parcel of land associated with the property was gifted to the Traditional Custodians.
