Mount Painter:Â A Scenic and Ecological Escape
Nestled in the southern part of the District of Belconnen, Mount Painter Nature Reserve spans 93 hectares of protected land. This area forms a vital part of Canberra Nature Park, offering visitors a blend of natural beauty and ecological importance. Located just a short drive from Canberra’s city centre, it is an accessible destination for those seeking both a peaceful escape and a chance to connect with nature.
Mount Painter is strategically positioned on the Ginninderra–Molonglo divide, providing panoramic views of northern Canberra and the Molonglo River valley. Its role extends beyond its scenic qualities, as it serves as an essential ecological link between several nature reserves. To the east, it connects with O’Connor Ridge and Black Mountain, while to the west and south, it adjoins The Pinnacle Nature Reserve and the Molonglo River Reserve. This network of reserves creates a vital corridor for local wildlife, allowing them to traverse a diverse landscape that stretches all the way to the Murrumbidgee River in the west.
For those eager to explore, Mount Painter is a rewarding destination for a variety of outdoor activities. The National Trail passes through the reserve, offering walkers and hikers a chance to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and take in the spectacular views. The reserve is also suitable for cycling, with access to management trails and sealed, shared trails. Horse riders can enjoy the marked equestrian trails, while dog owners can bring their pets along for the walk, provided they are kept on a leash.
The reserve is home to an array of natural values, including critically endangered Yellow Box–Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland. This area also harbours rare plant species, such as those found in the ‘wildflower triangle’ – a remarkable region of about 10 hectares, located across Bindubi Street from Aranda Bushland Nature Reserve. The diverse plant life supports a range of woodland birds, making it a rewarding spot for birdwatching. Mount Painter is also known for being a habitat for the vulnerable Perunga Grasshopper, adding to its ecological significance.
Since 1989, the dedicated volunteers of Friends of Mount Painter have been active in the reserve, contributing to various environmental initiatives. Their efforts include weed and erosion control, tree planting, and monitoring local wildlife, such as kangaroos and rabbit populations. These ongoing efforts are a testament to the community’s commitment to preserving the natural environment for future generations.
