Long Ocean Beach and Dune Country at Moore Park Beach

Overview

Moore Park Beach is a long stretch of open coast in the Bundaberg Region, about 18 km from Bundaberg. It combines a broad sandy shoreline with low foredunes and a foreshore that has been shaped by both surf conditions and active dune restoration. The beach runs for nearly 20 km, which gives the place a distinctly open, spacious feel compared with smaller pocket beaches further south.

Highlights

The standout feature here is scale. Moore Park Beach is a long, straight sweep of sand backed by dunes and coastal parkland, with wide views along the shoreline and out across the Coral Sea. Around the foreshore, mature trees and planted native vegetation soften the edge of the beach and give parts of the coast a greener, more settled character.

The northern and southern reaches feel slightly different in character, but the overall impression is of a big coastal landscape rather than a tightly enclosed beach. That sense of length and exposure is what makes Moore Park Beach distinctive.

Best Time to Visit

Cooler months generally make this coast more comfortable for walking, with milder daytime temperatures and lower humidity than summer. Conditions can also feel clearer and more settled through winter and early spring, which suits longer outings along the foreshore.

Summer has its own appeal, especially when sea turtle nesting is underway, but it is also the warmer and more humid time of year.

Plants and Animals

The foreshore and dune system support typical coastal vegetation, including native trees and shrubs used in local revegetation works to help stabilise the shoreline. These plant communities are an important part of the beach landscape, holding sand in place and buffering the coast.

Moore Park Beach is also a nesting site for sea turtles, including loggerhead turtles, during the summer months. That gives the area ecological value well beyond its role as a swimming and walking beach.
