Rehabilitated Jarrah Country Near Jarrahdale
Overview
Langford Park sits just outside Jarrahdale in the Perth Hills, about 50 minutes south-east of Perth. Today it is a forest recreation area, but the shape of the place has been strongly influenced by rehabilitation after bauxite mining. Mining here began in the early 1960s, and the area was opened as Langford Park in 1975 as the landscape was progressively restored.
Highlights
The setting is classic jarrah forest country on the Darling Scarp, with a mix of taller eucalypt woodland, open patches and gently undulating ground. Around Langford Park, the scenery has a different feel from long-undisturbed bush because the land has been reshaped and revegetated, creating a patchwork of maturing forest and more open clearings near the recreation area.
Its position near Jarrahdale also gives it a strong sense of place within the southern Perth Hills, where forested ridges and inland slopes start to pull away from the metropolitan edge.
Best Time to Visit
The cooler months from autumn to spring are usually the most pleasant time to be in Langford Park, when the jarrah forest is greener and walking conditions are more comfortable. Late winter and spring can be especially appealing as the surrounding bush is often at its freshest and seasonal wildflowers begin to show through the regrowth.
Plants and Animals
Langford Park is part of the jarrah forest belt, so the vegetation is centred on jarrah woodland and associated south-west forest species that have returned through rehabilitation. Because the site has been progressively restored over time, the plant life reflects both the local forest setting and the long process of regrowth on previously mined ground.
Recorded species lists exist for the park, showing it supports native flora and fauna within this regenerated landscape, though the place is better understood as a recovering forest environment than a single-species destination.
Culture and Heritage
Langford Park lies within Noongar country, and the park is recognised as having Aboriginal Traditional Owners. The wider Jarrahdale area is also identified as Whadjuk Noongar country, which places Langford Park within a landscape of long-standing cultural connection as well as more recent forestry and mining history.
