Wildflower Country on the Ravensthorpe Range

Overview

Kundip Nature Reserve is a Class A nature reserve on the southern side of the Ravensthorpe Range, east-south-east of Ravensthorpe in Western Australia’s south coast hinterland. Covering a little over 2,170 hectares, it protects a substantial patch of native bush in a part of the state known for its unusually rich plant diversity and its mix of upland ridges, rocky slopes and broad southern landscapes.

The reserve sits within the wider Ravensthorpe range country, an area recognised for its strong botanical values and for the way its native vegetation links inland landscapes with the Fitzgerald River area to the south. That setting gives Kundip a distinctly south coast feel, but with a rugged inland character rather than a coastal one.

Highlights

The main appeal here is the character of the Ravensthorpe Range itself. Around Kundip, the landscape is shaped by ancient rocky country, ridgelines and slopes that break up the surrounding plains and create a more varied, textured setting than you might expect from a quick glance at the map.

In season, the reserve is part of one of the south coast’s best wildflower districts. The combination of range country, shrubland and mallee-heath gives the area plenty of colour and detail, especially when the vegetation is in bloom and the natural contrast between rocky ground, low scrub and taller eucalypts is at its clearest.

Best Time to Visit

Spring is usually the standout time to see Kundip at its best, when the Ravensthorpe district’s wildflowers are most noticeable and the reserve’s plant diversity is easiest to appreciate. The cooler months from late winter into spring also tend to suit walking better than the hotter, drier part of the year.

Outside wildflower season, the reserve still has a strong sense of place thanks to its range scenery and intact bush, but the finer detail of the vegetation is less showy in summer and early autumn.

Plants and Animals

Kundip protects flora and fauna habitat within one of the most botanically rich parts of the Ravensthorpe Range. The broader range supports very high plant diversity, with many species found only in this district or occurring here in especially strong concentrations. Vegetation in the area includes shrublands and mallee-heath, with eucalypt-rich communities spread across different soils and slopes.

That diversity in plant communities helps support a varied animal life as well. The wider Ravensthorpe Range has long been recognised for its vertebrate fauna as well as its flora, and reserves such as Kundip are important because they keep sizable areas of this connected habitat intact.
