Permanent Water on the Lyons River at Goolinee
Overview
Goolinee, also known as Cattle Pool, is a permanent pool on the Lyons River in Mount Augustus National Park in Western Australia’s Gascoyne region. It sits within a dry inland landscape where reliable water shapes the character of the place, drawing birds and adding a calmer, greener edge to the river corridor than you might expect in the surrounding country.
This is one of the park’s quieter corners, known less for big rock faces and more for the contrast between still water, river gums and birdlife. It lies near Mount Augustus, roughly 850 kilometres north of Perth, and gives a different sense of the wider park from the better-known mountain views and gorges nearby.
Highlights
The defining feature here is the long-lasting water in the Lyons River. That permanence gives Goolinee a distinct look and feel, with reflective water, shaded river edges and a softer river landscape set against the arid plains around Mount Augustus.
Scenically, the appeal is in the contrast. The pool sits within a broad inland setting of rocky country and open ground, while the river corridor supports a denser band of vegetation and a steady concentration of birdlife. It is a place where the landscape feels quieter and more intimate than the larger landforms elsewhere in the park.
Best Time to Visit
Cooler months are generally the most comfortable time to spend time around Goolinee. In the milder part of the year, the river pool and surrounding vegetation are easier to appreciate without the intense heat that shapes much of the Gascoyne inland for long stretches of the year.
If you are interested in birdlife, timing can make a real difference. Because permanent water is such a strong draw in this landscape, conditions around the pool can be especially rewarding when waterbirds and other species are active along the river.
Plants and Animals
Goolinee is especially valued for its birdlife. Permanent water along the Lyons River attracts waterbirds and other species that gather around the pool and its sheltered banks, making this one of the more reliable wildlife-watching spots in the park.
Birds recorded around Cattle Pool include black cormorants, swans, ducks, blue-winged kookaburras and sacred kingfishers. The broader Mount Augustus area also supports animals such as euros, perenties, bungarras and birds of prey, with the river vegetation at Goolinee adding an important pocket of habitat within the drier surrounding country.
Culture and Heritage
Goolinee has direct cultural significance for Wajarri people and is recognised as an important site with spiritual value. The broader national park is jointly managed with the Wajarri Yamaji Aboriginal Corporation, reflecting the continuing connection between Country and contemporary park management.
