Western Australia’s arboretum in the hills above Balingup
Overview
Golden Valley Tree Park is a 60 hectare landscaped park just south of Balingup, in the South West hills about 230 kilometres from Perth. It grew from former farmland into an arboretum with both Australian and international plantings, and it remains one of the most distinctive tree-focused places in the state.
What sets it apart is the way broad meadows, a creek line, gentle slopes and mature plantings all sit together in one settled rural landscape. Rather than feeling like bushland, it has the character of a carefully shaped tree park, with space to notice individual specimens as well as the wider sweep of the valley.
Highlights
The park’s standout feature is its arboretum, the largest in Western Australia, bringing together native and exotic trees from around the world. The setting is especially appealing because the collections are spread across rolling ground rather than packed into a formal botanic layout, so the scenery changes from open paddocks and groves to shaded gullies and creekside areas.
There is also a strong seasonal character here. Spring brings blossom and fresh growth, while autumn is known for the red, orange and gold tones of the deciduous trees. That changing colour is a big part of why the place feels so different from one visit to the next.
Best Time to Visit
Golden Valley Tree Park has interest through the year, but the most memorable times are usually spring and autumn. Spring is the season for blossom and new leaf, while autumn is when the deciduous collections put on their strongest colour.
Winter and summer have their own quieter appeal, especially if you enjoy the contrast between evergreen and deciduous plantings and the more open look of the landscape outside peak colour seasons.
Plants and Animals
Trees are the main story here. The collections include both native and exotic species, with Australian plantings alongside trees from overseas, giving the park a broader botanical range than you would usually expect in a country setting. The mix of tall eucalypts, oaks, conifers and other northern hemisphere trees creates a park that changes noticeably in texture, colour and form as you move through it.
The combination of meadows, creek edges and mature canopy also supports local wildlife, although the place is better known for its living tree collection than for any one standout animal species.
Culture and Heritage
Golden Valley Tree Park includes the Golden Valley homestead and surrounding cultural landscape, which are recognised for their heritage significance. The broader place combines an 1880s homestead setting with later arboretum plantings, showing how an older farming property evolved into the tree park seen today.
