Koala Bushland and Creekside Forest at Ford Road

Overview

Ford Road Conservation Area is a 134ha bushland reserve in Sheldon, on Redlands Coast south-east of Brisbane. It sits along Buhot Creek and protects a substantial stretch of native vegetation that also helps link nearby reserves and parkland into a broader block of habitat.

This is an important part of the Koala Bushland Coordinated Conservation Area, a connected landscape shared with nearby conservation land at Venman Bushland National Park, Daisy Hill Conservation Park and adjoining council reserves. Within that larger network, Ford Road stands out as a buffer along Tingalpa and Buhot creeks and as a strong patch of core koala habitat.

Highlights

The character of the area comes from its creekline setting and the contrast between moist riparian forest and open eucalypt regrowth. Along Buhot Creek, the bush is denser and more sheltered, while the surrounding slopes carry a more open forest structure. That mix gives the reserve a varied feel despite being so close to the suburban edge of Brisbane.

Another standout is how connected the landscape feels. Ford Road is not an isolated pocket of bush, but part of a much larger sweep of protected habitat extending across this part of Sheldon and into neighbouring parklands. That continuity is a big part of what makes the area feel substantial on the ground.

Best Time to Visit

The more comfortable months are usually the cooler, drier stretch from autumn to spring, when humidity is lower and the forest is easier to enjoy at a slower pace. After rain, the creekside sections and riparian vegetation tend to feel especially fresh and green.

If your main interest is wildlife and birdlife, quieter times of day in the milder months are often the most rewarding, particularly when the surrounding bush is active and temperatures are not as harsh as mid-summer.

Plants and Animals

Ford Road Conservation Area is valued for its biodiversity, with moist riparian closed forest along the creek set among open regrowth eucalypt forest. An endangered notophyll vine forest regional ecosystem survives here, alongside old-growth koala food trees and hollow-bearing habitat trees that support a wide range of wildlife.

The reserve also protects several threatened or highly localised plant species, including Eprapah wattle, weeping bottlebrush and silver weeping tea tree. Large brush box trees support epiphytic plants, and the variety of vegetation across the site adds to its value as habitat for birds, butterflies and other native fauna.
