Eurobodalla National Park: Walks and Coastal Hikes on the NSW South Coast

Eurobodalla National Park sits along the far south coast of New South Wales, stretching from Moruya Head to Mystery Bay, about 300 kilometres south of Sydney. Close to coastal towns such as Moruya, Narooma, Bodalla and Tuross Head, the park is well placed for a day trip or a relaxed weekend away. It offers a wide mix of experiences, from short coastal walks and longer bushwalks to swimming, fishing and time on the water, making it easy to shape a visit around your own pace.

The landscape is defined by its variety. Lagoons, lakes and estuaries sit alongside sheltered beaches and more exposed stretches of coastline. This creates a setting where different activities sit side by side. You might spend the morning walking along a headland, then shift to a quiet beach or paddle across a calm lake in the afternoon. Places like 1080 Beach are popular for surfing, while Brou Lake and Lake Tuross provide calmer water for kayaking, fishing and boating. Lookouts along the coast offer clear views and are well known as reliable spots for whale watching during the migration season.

For those drawn to walking, there are plenty of options that range from short, accessible walks to longer coastal hikes. The Bingi Dreaming Track is one of the standout routes, covering around 14 kilometres from Congo to Tuross Head. It links beaches, headlands and coastal heath, offering a continuous walk that reflects both the natural environment and its cultural significance. Whether you are exploring shorter bushwalks or planning a longer day out, there are all trails here to suit different levels of experience.

Camping is a big part of the experience. Congo campground is a well known spot for families, set close to the beach with easy access to the surrounding coastline. Nearby, Beachcomber Holiday Park offers another option right by the water, where kangaroos are often seen moving through the area. If you are staying longer, it is worth taking time to explore nearby towns such as Tilba and Mogo, which add a different perspective to the region.

The park also has a strong connection to both natural and cultural history. It supports a wide range of plant and animal life, including more than 130 recorded bird species. Estuaries and headlands provide important seasonal habitat for migratory birds, and in summer you may see little terns nesting along sandy areas. Care is needed around these sites to avoid disturbance. The area also reflects a period of rapid change during the 1800s, when gold rushes, timber activity and agriculture shaped the development of small coastal settlements. At South Head in Moruya, remnants of early shipping infrastructure still mark the role the river once played in transport and trade.

Eurobodalla National Park is the traditional Country of the Yuin people. The land continues to hold cultural significance, and the Bingi Dreaming Track follows pathways that connect places used by the Brinja Yuin people and neighbouring groups. Walking here offers more than just a physical experience, with opportunities to reflect on the long-standing connection between people and place.

The park can be visited year round, with each season offering something different. Autumn is well suited to fishing along the coast or around the lakes. Spring brings wildflowers and is an ideal time for walks along the Bingi Dreaming Track. Summer suits beachside camping and time in the water, while winter is known for whale watching, particularly from places like Mystery Bay.

Access points are spread along the Princes Highway, with turnoffs leading to different sections of the park. Roads to Mystery Bay, Brou Lake, Potato Point and South Head provide entry to key areas, making it easy to plan your visit based on the experiences you are looking for.
