Eurobodalla Coast Walks: Beaches, Headlands and Coastal Hikes on the Nature Coast

The Eurobodalla coastline stretches for more than 110 kilometres along the New South Wales south coast, centred around Batemans Bay, about 280 kilometres south of Sydney. Often referred to as the Nature Coast, this region offers a raw and varied landscape where coastal bushland meets the sea and long stretches of shoreline remain largely untouched. It is a place where bushwalks and coastal hikes feel unforced, shaped more by the land itself than by built infrastructure, and where the cultural presence of the Yuin people continues to be recognised across Country.

One of the defining features of the area is its remarkable collection of beaches. There are 83 in total, each with its own character. Some are open and exposed, with strong surf and wide sand, while others are sheltered and calm, ideal for a slower pace. It is easy to move between very different environments within a short distance, which makes the region well suited to a mix of walks and short hikes. Bingie Bingie Point stands out as a geological highlight, where ancient magma formations cut through the landscape, creating a stark contrast against the surrounding sand and sea.

For those looking to explore on foot, there are plenty of options that range from short, accessible walks to longer coastal hikes. Broulee Island offers a simple but rewarding circuit that can be completed in an afternoon, moving between dunes, rocky shoreline and quiet sections of beach. Further south, Narooma’s Wagonga Inlet is known for its striking blue water and the distinctive shapes of Glasshouse Rocks, providing another setting where short walks can feel immersive without being demanding.

Wildlife is a constant presence along the coast, often appearing when you least expect it. Offshore, Montague Island Nature Reserve, also known as Barunguba, supports a large colony of fur seals and an important little penguin population. On the mainland, places like South Durras are known for regular sightings of eastern grey kangaroos resting on the sand, particularly in the early morning. These encounters are part of what makes walking in this region feel grounded and real.

For a longer, more connected experience, the Bingi Dreaming Track runs for 14 kilometres through Eurobodalla National Park, following pathways that have long been used by the Brinja-Yuin people. It links headlands, beaches and coastal heath, offering a continuous route that reflects both the natural environment and its cultural significance. Whether you are planning short walks, extended bushwalks or coastal hikes, the Eurobodalla region offers a wide range of all trails that suit different levels of experience and time.
