Elbow Island sits in the lower Kalgan River within the Oyster Harbour system, north-east of Albany. It is a small island in a broad river bend, close to where the Kalgan opens into the shallow estuarine waters of Oyster Harbour. The island itself is a Class A reserve set aside for park lands and recreation, and its setting is shaped as much by the river and harbour around it as by the land on the island.

This is a quiet corner of the Albany waterways, with sheltered water, tidal mudflats and low-lying estuarine country giving the place its character. The wider harbour is recognised as a nationally important wetland, which helps explain why even a small island here feels tied into a much larger natural system.

Spring is an especially rewarding time around Elbow Island, when the south coast’s milder weather and seasonal growth freshen the river margins and wetland edges. Autumn can also be a lovely time for the same reason that much of the lower Kalgan is so appealing: calmer days and clear light tend to suit the sheltered estuary setting.

Because the island is part of an estuarine environment rather than a high, exposed coastal site, its mood changes noticeably with tides, seasonal water levels and the angle of the light. That shifting river-and-harbour character is part of what makes the place memorable throughout the year.

Elbow Island is part of the Oyster Harbour wetland landscape, so the natural life around it is closely linked to estuarine habitat. Mudflats, shallow water, river edges and fringing vegetation support birdlife typical of sheltered coastal inlets, and the wider harbour is known for its ecological value as wetland habitat.

The lower Kalgan and Oyster Harbour also sit within a broader system that supports fish, crustaceans, seagrass and tidal vegetation. Even where the island itself is small, it belongs to a much larger chain of habitats that includes the river channel, harbour shallows and wetland margins.
