Mangroves and Tidal Flats on Moreton Bay’s Northern Edge

Overview

Deception Bay Conservation Park protects a small but distinct stretch of coastal wetland on the western side of Moreton Bay, within the Moreton Bay local government area north of Brisbane. Although the park covers only about 185 hectares, almost all of it is wetland, with intertidal mangroves, saltmarsh and saltflats shaping the character of the place.

Highlights

The park’s appeal is tied to its broad, low-lying coastal setting rather than dramatic terrain. This is a landscape of tides, mudflats and mangrove-lined edges, where the meeting of land and bay creates an open, shifting scene that changes with the water level and the light. Because the wetlands are so dominant here, the whole area has a quiet, estuarine feel that is quite different from the drier bushland parks nearby.

Best Time to Visit

Deception Bay suits cooler, drier months best, when the humidity is lower and the exposed edges of the wetland are generally more comfortable to spend time around. Seasonal changes are subtle here, so the main difference through the year is less about flowering or big landscape shifts and more about how the weather affects the feel of this tidal coastal country.

Plants and Animals

Wetland vegetation defines the park. Mangroves, saltmarsh plants and other intertidal species dominate, including river mangrove, swamp she-oak, common reed and succulent salt-tolerant plants such as samphire and seepweed. The park is mapped as almost entirely natural intertidal wetland, which gives it a strong ecological identity despite its modest size.

Wildlife records reflect that mix of coastal wetland and adjoining habitat. The park supports a substantial list of species, with many birds recorded as well as animals such as koala and southern greater glider. Mangrove-associated birds including mangrove honeyeater and mangrove gerygone have also been recorded here, which fits the park’s sheltered tidal habitat.
