Where Moreton Bay Meets Cleveland Point

Overview

Cleveland sits on the mainland shore of southern Moreton Bay, around 30km east of central Brisbane, with its best-known natural setting gathered around Cleveland Point Recreation Reserve. This is a low, open headland where the bay, tidal flats and island views shape the whole character of the place. The point feels coastal rather than bushy, and its appeal comes from being right at the edge of the water, with broad views across the bay toward North Stradbroke Island and the surrounding foreshores.

The reserve is part of Redlands Coast’s public open space network and remains one of the district’s landmark waterfront places. Even when you are not setting out on a longer walk, it gives a strong sense of the bay landscape that defines this part of south-east Queensland.

The standout feature here is the headland itself. Cleveland Point projects into southern Moreton Bay, so the scenery is wide open and constantly changing with the tide, the light and the weather. Looking out across the water, you get a strong sense of the bay’s breadth, with mudflats, shoreline edges and island silhouettes all part of the view.

The surrounding waterfront has a distinctly maritime feel, but the natural interest is in the meeting of land and sea rather than dramatic terrain. It is a place for open horizons, sea breezes and a close view of the bay’s foreshore character.

Best Time to Visit

The most comfortable months are usually the cooler, drier stretch from autumn to early spring, when the air is clearer and walking along the foreshore is more pleasant. Winter and the shoulder seasons also tend to bring the crispest bay views.

Summer can still be rewarding, especially when sea breezes are up, but the exposed waterfront setting means heat and humidity are felt more strongly here than in a shaded inland reserve.

Plants and Animals

Cleveland Point is more about coastal edge habitat than dense bushland. The natural setting includes foreshore vegetation and intertidal areas that support the ecological health of the shoreline and provide habitat along the bay margin.

Across the broader Cleveland foreshore, the mix of tidal water, mudflat and vegetated shoreline supports the kinds of marine and bird life typical of southern Moreton Bay, even though the point’s main impression is its open coastal setting rather than a concentrated wildlife site.

Culture and Heritage

Cleveland Point Recreation Reserve is within an area affected by Quandamooka native title claims identified by Redland City Council, and the foreshore is also treated as a place where cultural heritage values need to be considered in shoreline works. The point is also closely tied to Cleveland’s maritime past through the preserved Cleveland Lighthouse, a local landmark dating from the 1860s that remains one of the defining historic features on the headland.
