Where Jarrah Forest Meets the Northern Edge of Karri Country
Overview
Bridgetown Jarrah Park sits in forest country west of Bridgetown, within the broader Dalgarup area of the south-west. It is known for its tall mixed forest and for the way different forest types come together here, including jarrah and marri with karri appearing in the wetter gullies and valleys. The park forms part of a landscape that local people have long valued for its strong sense of place and its distinctive forest character.
Highlights
The real appeal of Bridgetown Jarrah Park is its forest setting rather than any one landmark. Maranup Brook rises here, and the upper valley creates a cooler, greener pocket where tall forest species grow closely together. That meeting of jarrah, marri and karri gives the area a noticeably different feel from drier jarrah country further north, with deep shade, tall trunks and a stronger sense of moisture in the landscape.
The surrounding Dalgarup forest is also notable for its scenic variation. Lateritic uplands give way to incised valleys, and those changes in slope and drainage shape the look of the forest from one part of the area to the next.
Best Time to Visit
Spring is a particularly rewarding time to be here, when wildflowers are at their best and the forest feels fresh after winter rain. The cooler months generally suit walking better than the peak of summer, especially in a place where much of the character comes from the sheltered gullies and tall, mixed forest.
Plants and Animals
This is jarrah forest country, with marri across the uplands and more diverse vegetation in the valleys. In the wetter parts of the Dalgarup area, karri appears alongside species such as yarri, creating an unusual mix for this part of the south-west. One of the things that makes the area distinctive is that it includes the northernmost occurrence of karri.
The forest also supports native birdlife and other animals typical of the south-west forests. Around Bridgetown Jarrah Park, the combination of open forest and moister gullies adds to that variety, particularly in spring when flowering plants are most noticeable.
