Bendleby Ranges sits in the Southern Flinders Ranges, about 50 km north-east of Orroroo and roughly 3.5 hours from Adelaide. It covers around 37,000 acres across the Bendleby and Hungry ranges, with a mix of ridgelines, rocky hills, creek lines and open country that gives this part of South Australia its dry, folded range character.

This is a place people tend to picture in layers rather than single landmarks. Low ranges rise out of pastoral country, creeks cut through the hills, and the land opens to long views across the plains. From higher ground, the outlook can stretch towards features such as Wilpena Pound, Lake Frome and the Walloway Plains.

Best Time to Visit

The cooler months are usually the most comfortable time to be here, particularly from autumn into spring, when daytime temperatures are milder and the colours of the ranges tend to be at their best. After seasonal rain, the creeks and hillsides can feel noticeably fresher, and spring can bring bursts of wildflower colour through the drier country.

Summer has its own stark beauty, but the exposed hills and rocky ground can make the landscape feel much harsher through the middle of the day.

Plants and Animals

Bendleby Ranges combines several plant communities typical of the Flinders region, including pines and gums in some parts, rocky mallee country, and creek lines with taller trees. Across the broader Flinders landscape, eucalypts, spinifex and seasonal wildflowers are characteristic, and that same pattern helps shape the feel of this country.

Wildlife is part of the everyday character of the ranges rather than something separate from it. Kangaroos, emus, lizards and a wide variety of birds are regularly associated with the area, and the mix of rocky slopes, drainage lines and open ground gives different species room to use the landscape in different ways.
