Balingup sits in the South West hill country, about 240 km south of Perth, where rolling farmland, creek lines and cooler upland conditions give the area a very different feel from the coast. Winter and spring bring greener hills, flowing creeks and a fresher feel across the valley country.

Summer has a drier, more open look, but the established tree cover still gives parts of the area a softer, cooler character than many lower-lying inland places.

The area’s planted landscape is unusually important to its identity. Golden Valley Tree Park holds more than 3,000 trees from over 500 species, split between an Australian collection and a world collection. That range makes Balingup especially interesting for anyone who notices how plantings shape a place, from tall eucalypts and mallee forms to deciduous species that are uncommon across much of Western Australia.
