Hiking Through Plenty Gorge Parklands
Plenty Gorge Parklands, situated in the traditional Country of the Wurundjeri Peoples, offer a variety of natural and cultural experiences just 20 kilometres from Melbourne CBD. The park’s stunning landscape views, abundant native wildlife, and walking trails make it an essential destination for nature enthusiasts. Shaped by volcanic activity, the Plenty River divides the park into two distinct geological types, with basalt on the west and sedimentary rock on the east, creating diverse habitats that support both threatened and regionally significant species.
Visitors can enjoy a picnic or barbecue in one of the park’s many recreation areas. The family-friendly Red Gum Picnic Area features a children’s adventure playground, picnic tables, and toilets with parenting and disabled facilities. Nearby walking tracks lead to the Morang Wetlands and the Hawkstowe Picnic Area. Hawkstowe Picnic Area, with its views of the Plenty River and the wooded Plenty Gorge, offers a quiet spot for a picnic or barbecue and is located near a historical homestead once part of the Hawkstowe Farm established in the 1850s by the Le Page family.
Middle Gorge provides spectacular views of the gorge and river from the viewing platform and walking tracks, offering a secluded picnic spot in peaceful surroundings. Yarrambat Picnic Ground has ample space for games and on-lead dog walking, with views of Kinglake National Park and Mt Disappointment. The Yellow Gum Recreation Area is ideal for bird and wildlife watching, bushwalking, picnicking, and barbecuing. Fishing enthusiasts with a current Victorian Amateur Fishing Licence can try their luck at Blue Lake, where the pink hues of the cliffs at sunset create a picturesque scene.
For those wishing to extend their stay, Nioka Bush Camp offers group camping facilities with bunkhouse accommodation available.
Visitors should check the Parks Victoria website for the latest information on local conditions and bushfire safety tips before planning their trip.
