Exploring N’Dhala Gorge: Ancient Rock Carvings and Rare Flora

N’Dhala Gorge Nature Park is a fascinating site protecting thousands of prehistoric rock carvings. Located in the East MacDonnell Ranges, 90 kilometres east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, this significant archaeological and heritage site also shelters rare plants.

Follow the 1.5 kilometre marked walking track into the gorge. Signs along the trail interpret some of the approximately 6,000 individual stone engravings, or petroglyphs. N’Dhala Gorge is also home to rare plants such as the Peach-leafed Poison Bush and the Undoolya Wattle. This walk extends further into the gorge, beyond the end of the marked trail.

N’Dhala Gorge Nature Park contains Eastern Arrernte men’s sacred sites, including petroglyphs, art sites, and shelter sites. The traditional owners call the area Ilwentje. The petroglyphs, created using either a fine pecking or pounding technique, are believed to span two different periods.

The park entry fees require a Parks Pass, with NT residents exempt. For safety, observe park signs and carry plenty of water. The Aboriginal custodians for the site, including the Oliver, Ryder, and Williams families, welcome you. The Gorge is a cultural treasure house containing over 5,900 petroglyphs, several art sites, shelter areas, and other culturally significant sites. The designs are connected with a Caterpillar Dreaming story.

N’Dhala Gorge is also an important site for fire-sensitive plants, including Sickle-Leaf Wattle and White Cypress Pine. The cooler months from April to September are more pleasant for visits, although the park is generally accessible year-round.

Access to the nature park is via the Ross Highway. Beyond the Ross River Homestead, the track is suitable for four-wheel drive vehicles only. There is a bush camping area with toilets and picnic tables. Camping fees apply, and campsites must be booked online before arrival. No water is provided, so visitors should bring their own supplies.
