Discover the Howqua Hills Historic Area

Located approximately 200 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, the Howqua Hills Historic Area is steeped in both natural beauty and historical significance. Situated within the traditional lands of the Taungurung people, this area is characterised by its secluded valley on the Howqua River. Once a bustling gold mining hub, the region now offers a serene escape for visitors.

The park is renowned for its diverse landscapes, encompassing river flats and hills adorned with manna gum and narrow-leaved peppermint trees. A variety of recreational activities are available, including picnics, horse riding, bushwalking, fishing, and four-wheel driving. Begin your exploration at the information shelter at Sheepyard Flat North to gain insights into the area’s rich history.

Camping along the Howqua River is a popular choice for experiencing the park’s natural beauty. Several camping areas, including Blackbird, Fry’s, Sheepyard North and South, Davon’s, Noonan’s, Pickerings, and Tunnel Bend Flat, offer opportunities to relax and unwind. While enjoying the outdoors, keep an eye out for native wildlife such as kangaroos and platypuses. Please remember to bring your own firewood for your camping experience.

Immerse yourself in the region’s history by visiting the remnants of once-thriving mining settlements. Fry’s Hut, a notable example of local craftsmanship, is a short drive from Sheepyard Flat. Explore the 100-metre tunnel at Tunnel Bend, a testament to the ingenuity of early miners.

For those seeking outdoor adventure, the Howqua Hills Historic Area offers a range of walking tracks. The Howqua Hills Historic Walk provides an easy introduction to the area, tracing the river’s path and showcasing remnants of the gold mining era. More challenging hikes are also available, including the High and Low Tracks along the Howqua, Lickhole Creek, Eagles Peaks, and the Bluff walk.

Horse riding enthusiasts can explore the area between November and May. Horse yards are available at Fry’s Flat and Tunnel Bend Flat, with additional options in the nearby Alpine National Park. Bookings are essential.
