Looking to do a multi day hike around the Bogong High Plains and wondering if anyone has any insights for water availability and permanent water sources aside from Falls Creek township. Planning on starting on 27th December this year at Mountain Creek Campsite with overnights at (or near):

    • Cleve Cole Hut
    • Edmonston or Johnstone Hut
    • Rocky Valley Creek (below Howmans Gap Discovery Camp)
    • Big River Crossing
    • Michell Hut

Thanks for the question Torsten. Sounds like a fun adventure. I will share a link to this to my facebook page to see if anyone has any thoughts.

Hey Torsten. I just received a response to your question from Alicia Crossley. I’m local to this area & o/night walk frequently. Mountain Creek, Cleve Cole Hut tap/spring, Camp Creek, Big River, creeks at Roper Hut, Edmondson Hut & Johnston Hut & Rocky Valley Creek are all reliable permanent water sources. I would not rely on tank water at Michell Hut. Jan & Feb this year was the driest I have seen this area, minor sources & soak areas dried up until recent rain whilst main sources (listed above) flowed but at low level. Some low flow creeks had more weed, slime or algal growth than usual, I assume due to low flow & increased water temperature.

Excellent info, thank you for that. This should let me keep my pack weight to about 16kg while carrying 3-4 litres of water per day.

Yes, hopefully that will help a lot. Good luck with the adventure.
