Aside from the obvious safety gear, my best hack for gear is my Exped seating mat. I use it on day walks for bigger days, as it’s very lightweight. It’s great for the quick snack/ rest stop, to sit on a log or ground. I use it as the entrance/exit mat at the door of my hiking tent, so I don’t get hands and knees dirty getting in and out of the tent. As a side sleeper, it’s great under the sleeping mat to give that extra bit of comfort, so my hip doesn’t get sore (I normally put it in a plastic bag, so as not to dirty the tent floor or sleeping equipment). It even gets a run under my bag, if I’m putting it in the back seat, when I have a boot full of camping gear.
