The North South Track is an 11km, grade 3 hike in Wellington Park, Tasmania, typically taking about 4 hours to complete.
This shared-use trail, popular with both mountain bikers and walkers, connects Hobart and Glenorchy. The path gently winds through the dry mudstone forests of Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park. As you ascend, you'll travel through the threatened silver peppermint woodland and into wetter stringybark forests, eventually skirting around kunanyi / Mount Wellington to reach The Springs.
The track is designed for two-way traffic. At the lower end, near the 5-ways intersection, it splits into separate descent and ascent trails, which merge at the heart of Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park.
Completed in December 2011, this trail links Hobart and Glenorchy through Wellington Park. It features sweeping berms and smooth rides, with optional mini-side loops for those seeking more challenging routes.
The track is suitable for mountain bikers of moderate skill, with some challenging features on the side loops. The good sight lines ensure that riders and walkers can see each other easily. To avoid the busiest times, consider visiting on a weekday rather than a weekend.
This hike has been described as 11km one way, and can be turned into a full-day (22km) adventure by returning along the same route.
