Mount Abrupt is a 6.3km, grade 3 hike located in Grampians National Park, Victoria. The hike should take around 2.5 hours to complete.
Hike overview
Rising gradually as it heads north toward nearby Signal Peak (780 metres), the trail swings suddenly to the south-west and follows an escarpment rim toward Mount Abrupt. Once there, take in the wonderful views of the Serra Range to the north and over Dunkeld in the south. Keep an eye open for wedge-tailed eagles, nankeen kestrels and peregrine falcons.
This Mount Abrupt hike, suitable for fit and energetic walkers, can involve water crossings, slippery track surfaces, rock hopping and rock scrambling. The steep track winds its way through heathy woodland to a ridge. Follow the ridge over rock slabs and stunted montane vegetation to the summit, for one of the most spectacular views.
A large landside caused by the storm event in January 2011 badly damaged this walking track. Parks Victoria has worked hard to rebuild this track but further rain could cause movement of soil and rock over the track.
Please note the following when walking this track:
- Sections of the Mount Abrupt walking track may be susceptible to
Landslips - Rock and soil falls may occur from above the track
- Future heavy rain events may cause further landslips and flash
flooding in these areas - Do not stop in landslide hazard areas during or after heavy rain
- Your safety is our concern but your responsibility

A very pleasant hike that takes a lot less than 3 hours. If you’re fit and in a hurry, you could easily do it in 2.
At a moderate pace, stopping to take in the views (and catch your breath) it’s about 2 1/4 hours (about 80 minutes up, less than 60 minutes back).
Great 365 degree views on a wintery day; would be baking hot and pretty exposed at the peak during summer. So take plenty of water and enjoy some great views north across the Grampians.
if we venture to the Grampians soon Bec Louise
