The Penguin Cradle Trail is a legacy bush walking track that commences on the Coast in Penguin, Tasmania all the way to Cradle Mountain in Tasmania’s highlands.  The track itself took 11 years to complete, and we give thanks to the North West Walking Club who not only surveyed, cut and marked the track, but continue to maintain it to this day.

At the most southern stage of the the Penguin Cradle Trail is the hike that takes you to the Fourways, a region where 3 distinct creeks and rivers converge. On Fleece Creek is a series of waterfalls that can be seen from a distance when walking along the trail. The walking Track will guide you close to the falls where you can get much closer to this spectacular part of the trail.

About the Hike

There are 2 ways to reach the Fourways. You could walk westwards from Cradle Mountain lodge, along Speelers Track, before branching off onto the Penguin Cradle Trail. A shorter way is from the north, commencing at the Vale of Belvoir lookout, and then following the well marked trail towards Mt Beecroft.  The walk commences by climbing a series of rock steps up onto the hill from the side of the road, and then gradually walking uphill.  Wooden stakes sticking out of the ground guide you over the open hills and plains, providing you magnificent panaromaic views all round.  To the north are views of The River Leven.  To the east and south east are views of Mt Roland, Cradle Mountain, and even Barn Bluff in the distance. Directly to your south is Mt Beecroft, that has a side track that can be used to climb to its summit.  The track is muddy slippery most of the time, and care needs to be taken when walking along the alpine plains. After about 90 minutes of walking, The Fourways waterfalls will come into view from a distance in the valley below the hills you are walking.  Continue to follow the wooden stakes, and a fork in the track will then guide you down to the valley where the waterfalls, and Speelers Track can be accessed.
