Summary

Lower Chasm Falls is a small and beautiful waterfall situated on Smoko Creek, in the Meander State Forest, approximately 14kms from the township of Meander. The area along Smoko Creek consists of many cascades with Smoko Falls, Middle Chasm Falls, and Chasm Falls situated nearby.

Access to the waterfalls is via the Meander State Forest along old, unsealed forestry roads. This section is is really only suitable for 4WD vehicles, however, a standard car can be used if the roads are dry. The road abruptly ends due to a bridge being washed away, and the remainder of the trip must be done on foot.

The Hike

The hike itself takes approximately 1 hour and the start of the journey will require crossing Meander River by foot. This should not be attempted in flood conditions, however in normal conditions there are various rocks that could be stepped on to cross over, though they tend to be very slippery.  Once you cross to the other side of the river, the walk to Chasm Falls continues on the disused vehicle track. The walk is a steady uphill walk that takes approximately 25 minutes until you reach a clearing in the forest. At this juncture there is signage which points you along various paths to take for different hikes. By following the reflective markers on trees, as well as the pink ribbons tied to branches at various intervals, the track narrows considerably, zig-zagging itself through scrub. About 20 minutes later, you will reach your destination.

The track is overgrown in places, and is not well maintained, due to the bridges being washed out. Care must be taken to follow reflectors, and ribbons on trees to guide you.
