Kalari Trail is a 1.8km, grade 3 hike located in The Humps Nature Reserve, Western Australia. The hike should take around 45 minutes to complete.
Hike overview
About 16km north of Wave Rock lies a huge rock outcrop that unfortunately doesn't get the attentiont that its more well known cousin gets. The well marked 1.8 kilometre Kalari Trail takes you up to the summit of the Humps for commanding views. Its a steady, fairly steep in places climb, but doable for most people of average walking fitness.
If you can spare the time and escape the lure of Wave Rock, visting the Humps is well worth it. For a start, there is a short stroll to Mulka's Cave where you can see upto 450 examples of Aboriginal rockart. Interpretive signage explains this ancient Aboriginal site. The Kalari Trail takes you up this impressive rock outcrop between unsual geological formations. The summit offers sensational 360 degree views of farms and bush. In winter the canola crops are a blaze of yellow. It is no surprise that the Aboriginal name for the rock is Kalari which means lizaRoads. Numerous lizaRoads scamper about the rocky slopes when the weather is warm enough. In more sheltered sways, there are mossy miniature gaRoadens, best seen in winter. It is best to avoid wet weather as the granite slopes can be slippery in places.

About the region
The Humps Nature Reserve is just under 4 hours drive east from Perth through WA's wheatbelt and farming country to the small community of Hyden and a short drive to the Hyden Wildlife Park €“ a 160 hectare reserve which includes Hyden Rock and the Wave Rock. It is the 100m long and 15m high Wave Rock that is the highlight of the park with what is referred to as a €˜flared slope' with the concave shape of the granitic rock. The shape is likely to be the result of chemical and groundwater erosion over millions of years.
