Concern Grows Over Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing Development in Victoria’s Alpine National Park
Victoria’s Alpine National Park (ANP) is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rugged natural beauty, and unique sense of remoteness. It holds a special place in the hearts of Australians, providing one of the few opportunities for large-scale outdoor recreation in the country. Widely recognised as the ‘high country,’ the ANP is cherished by community groups for its recreational, mental health, social, and cultural significance.
The Current State of the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing
The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing (FHAC) is a 37-kilometre, three-day hiking route traversing the pristine mountain scenery of the Bogong High Plains in the Victorian Alps. Connecting the alpine resorts of Falls Creek and Hotham, it offers a stunningly isolated wilderness experience enjoyed by thousands of recreational hikers each year. However, this treasured outdoor adventure may soon change dramatically.
Growing Concerns Over Commercial Development
The Victorian Government has announced a $15 million preliminary investment in ‘upgrading’ the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing. While the official media release was vague, the full master plan outlines a $34 million project aimed at introducing luxury, serviced accommodation run by licensed tour operators. The goal appears to be attracting high-spending international tourists, but at what cost?
While I support commercial operators who assist people in exploring remote areas they may not otherwise have the confidence to visit, I am deeply concerned about government and tourism bodies pushing through ill-conceived plans that prioritize profit over conservation. These developments risk diminishing the wilderness experience, reducing accessibility for independent hikers, and undermining the very essence of what makes the ANP so special.
As stewards of our natural heritage, the government has a responsibility to protect this powerful and distinctive landscape. It is crucial that we raise our voices before irreversible changes take place. We do not need or want commercial developments encroaching upon one of Victoria’s most remote and pristine regions.
Taking Action
I have formally written to all relevant Ministers and Parks Victoria, urging them to halt this development for the sake of both environmental preservation and future generations. It is imperative that our children and grandchildren have the opportunity to experience the ANP in its raw and untouched beauty, just as we do today.
How You Can Help
I encourage all concerned individuals to review the FHAC Master Plan and form their own opinion. If you share my concerns, I urge you to make a submission to Parks Victoria to express your opposition to this development.
I do not often speak out publicly, but I strongly believe that protecting our heritage-listed national parks from commercial exploitation is a cause worth fighting for. Together, we can help safeguard this stunning region of Victoria for generations to come.
