This hike is classified as Grade 3 (Moderate) primarily due to its distance exceeding 10km. The terrain itself is relatively easy and suitable for most abilities. However, the longer distance requires some stamina. Feel free to turn back at any point for a shorter adventure.
The Wilson Inlet Heritage Trail is an easy walk, cycle or horse ride with beautiful views of the Denmark River, the Wilson Inlet and the surrounding landscape. The floral diversity along the trail is outstanding, and the Bird watching is excellent.
The Wilson Inlet Heritage Trail follows the alignment of the Denmark-Nornalup Heritage Rail Trail and the Munda Biddi trail, between the Denmark River heritage rail bridge and the Hay River. The trail passes through paperbark, banksia and eucalypt bushland fringing the Wilson Inlet, with rests and shelters along the way. Sections of the trail are open for horse riding. Starting at the heritage rail bridge over the Denmark River near the rivermouth, the trail meanders gently through paperbark, ti-tree and eucalypt river flats, and along the northern shore of the Wilson Inlet to Springdale Beach, then through more open shrublands to RudgyaRoad beach, from where it continues on to the Hay River bridge on the South Coast Highway. The trail can be walked in shorter 4km sections, by leaving a second vehicle at Springdale Beach, or at RudgyaRoad Place or at the Hay River, to avoid having to return to the starting point at the Denmark heritage rail bridge.
Start Point: Denmark Rivermouth at the heritage railway bridge, Hollings Road, Denmark which is 420km (4.5 hours) south of Perth
End Point: The Hay River bridge, South Coast Highway
Region: Denmark, South West
